Average review score:

It is a great book -- lots of tidbits about insectsIt is a great book, lots of tidbits about insects. Little things you wouldn't know otherwise. The illustrations are funny too. I am an entomologist and it is a great source for presentations, because people are always wanting to know little tidbits about insects. The book has info about SEX and DEATH among the insect world. Dr. Berenbaum is a serious scientist, but this book shows that serious scientists can have a sense of humor too.

The People With Five Fingers: A Native Californian Creation Tale
Published in Hardcover by Marshall Cavendish Corp/Ccb (March, 2000)
Average review score:

Good Native American folktale for librariesAn old tale of Native Americans, coupled with abstract watercolors, comes together to form a picture book worthy of any library collection. The ancient animals have a premonition that humans will walk the earth. Coyote, the head animal, carves paths for water to flow; Gophers heave dirt to create mountains and valleys. Coyote imprints his paw in the soil to give humans five fingers. When humans walk the earth, the animals retreat to the ocean and mountains, while rejoicing in man's similarities and differences to one another.
Bierhorst's retelling is simple in style, yet compelling as a story. Parker's expressive watercolors merge to showcase the birth of the land and mankind, while reveling in the wonder of nature and animals. Children, drawn into the converging artwork, will want to discover more about the animals presented in the tale. California libraries should feature this book in any children's display of Native American culture.

Perennials: A Photographic Guide to More than 1,000 Plants
Published in Hardcover by DK Publishing (01 February, 2000)
Average review score:

Beautiful encyclopedia of perennialsAs a librarian and book reviewer with a speciality in gardening literature, I see a lot of perennials books come and go. The strength of this new title lies in the super DK photography and interesting arrangement by use in the perennial border - not a strict A-Z dictionary of plants. I found the selection of plants both comprehensive and up-to-date in terms of including new cultivars. This would be an excellent choice for someone seeking a current and beautiful encyclopedia of perennials.

Psychology and Society: Radical Theory and Practice
Published in Paperback by Pluto Press (01 August, 1996)
Average review score:

An excellent resource on Marxism and psychologyExtract from a longer review to be published in Psychology in Society (PINS): Psychology constitutes a flight from the real in two ways - firstly in that it imagines its object of study, the individual psyche, as separate from the historically specific economic and political realities which bring that subject into being, and secondly in that it imagines itself as a discipline functioning in a realm of ideas and facts independent of such realities. Marxism is a powerful antidote to such idealist tendencies, and this is well canvassed in the Parker & Spears volume - although probably not in a sufficiently elementary or forceful manner to garner many new recruits. Although this is a pity, it remains an impressive attempt to reclaim Marxism for psychology, and to collect together some of the best recent work in this tradition. There is also a subtext evident in many of the chapters, which speaks of a healthy impatience to start turning theoretical formulations into programmatic critical action within and beyond academia.
With the radical psychologists' organisation, Psychology Politics Resistance, starting to gain momentum and new initiatives, such as the planned international action research conference in July 1999, I expect that we will hear much more of this in the near future. If this is the case, the current volume will serve as a useful resource on the theoretical background to and conceptual and practical dangers of such action.

Raja'Oun We Will Return
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (December, 2001)
Average review score:

A "Pre-Review"I have just ordered the book, so my definitive review must perforce be postponed. I can, however, tell my fellow readers just why I am spending my money for this book. I must also guess at the star rating I would provide, as Amazon will not let me submit a review without this.
I have read Orin Parker's first novel, "Burial in Beirut". I am confident that this new work will share many of the same attributes of the former. Orin Parker's 'track record' tells me that I am destined for another fascinating read. Mr. Parker's experience in the Middle East, especially during the troubled years of which he writes, is my guarantee of an informed, provacative tale that will exude authenticity and excitement. His "Burial in Beirut" provided a view of Lebanon that was filled with the tribulations, the violence, the frustration, the human courage and determination that I saw in my years living in that troubled country. Mr. Parker marries his own experiences with his lively imagination to produce prose that is highly authentic, as well as exciting and romantic.
With Israel, Paletine and Jerusalem now seemingly forever in our daily headlines, Orin Parker's newest work will surely be even more fascinating and significant. I hope other Amazon customers will join me in enjoying "Raja'Oun."

Reaching into Thought : The Minds of the Great Apes
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (July, 1996)
Average review score:

Understanding Apes' MindsInteresting book in which a team of researchers described their look deep into and experiences with apes. This team of researchers shows the social, psychological and behavioral apects of Apes and how they set them apart from another animals and humans, as well as how they are similar to humans.
Although I preferred Anne Russon's "Orangutans : Wizards of the Rain Forest", I would think this book would be interesting for anyone with interests in human and animal psychology. This book takes a much more in-depth look at the apes' psychology than Russon's "Wizards of the Rain Forest" book.
